Dance of Awareness
Increase self awareness, make friends with your body, let go of limiting patterns from the past, and find the confidence to express yourself more freely.
Dance of Awareness is a conscious dance and movement practice based on developmental psychology. It offers a profound exploration of what it is to be in a body and to connect deeply with yourself and others. It incorporates several strands including character styles, authentic movement, five rhythms and mindfulness practice. There are no steps to learn, no judgment and no expectations.
The DoA cycle (sensing, grounding, expressing, releasing, connecting and completing) allows us to revisit our early body history, to celebrate the embodied patterns that make us unique, and to discover new ways of being who we are. As we move and breathe together we open more fully into self-awareness and a wider consciousness of our place in the world.
I run evening Dance of Awareness classes in Petersfield, and Chichester. They are both £10 and there is no need to book — just turn up. Bring a bottle of water and wear something comfortable, bearing in mind we will be lying on the floor for part of the session. If it’s your first time please check with me that the class you want to attend is running, as occasionally they may happen on different days of the month to those advertised.
The Petersfield class is a friendly and gently structured session which offers a mixture of free movement and structured exercises in pairs and groups. It is particularly suitable for those who are new to this kind of dance practice. We meet at the URC church hall on College Street, usually on the 2nd Friday of the month starting at 7.30pm. NB the October 2019 class is on the 4th, which is the first Friday.
The Chichester Wave
These sessions are very unstructured compared to the Petersfield class, with much less guidance. For this reason it may be more suitable for those who are already comfortable with conscious dance practices. The session offers a chance to dance and release freely as you feel to a wave of music. This session runs on the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at 7.00 pm at the Bassil Shippam Centre (Tozer Way, PO19 7LG).
